Our Mission

Under the mentorship of Dr. Joshua Parmenter, the Equity Lab seeks to center the voices of intersectionally oppressed communities, such as Queer and Trans* People of Color, and interrogate power structures to promote transformative change within our communities. Intersectionality, rooted in Black feminist scholarship and activism (Combahee River Collective, 1977; Collins, 2015; Crenshaw, 1989), serves as a framework for the Equity Lab’s research, teaching, and advocacy efforts. Our lab seeks to understand human experiences holistically by examining how multiple intersecting systems of oppression at the macro-level produce unique forms of intersectional stress and health inequities at the micro-level. Further, we are invested in documenting and empowering the strength-based experiences of oppressed communities as they resist against systemic oppression to promote collective liberation. Consistent with Intersectionality’s activist roots, we seek to critically examine power structures and “craft collective models of change” (May, 2015, p.xi).

Dr. Joshua Parmenter will be accepting new doctoral students in the Counseling Psychology program for the 2024-2025 school year. If you are interested in joining the Equity Lab, please contact Dr. Joshua Parmenter.
